Everyone at Chedington was filled with pride as the talented Spirit Moto Corsa team raced to victory at brands Hatch recently to secure the 2020 British GP2 Championships.
The partnership between The Chedington Court Estate and the Spirit team formed a couple of years ago. Keen to work collaboratively, and support local talent, the sponsorship agreement aims to both act as a catalyst to the team’s success and demonstrate to the wider world the depth of engineering and sporting talent here in Dorset.
The team were new to the BSB paddock and the season had not been without its challenges, with both technical set-backs and pandemic restrictions to contend with. However, they demonstrated their strength and determination, working hard behind the scenes to prepare for the final. Despite lacking in crucial development and testing time, the SP2 bike pulled through for an impressive win when it counted.
With such a new team, this is an outstanding achievement and an incredible start. The combination of the SP2 motorbike, and the focus and skill of 24-year-old rider Mason Law sealed the victory at the Bennets GP2 Championships. Law, who impressed with two faultless performances around the iconic Brands Hatch GP circuit in Kent, has achieved four wins from his seven podiums this season. We’re excited to see what is ahead for these guys.
Team principle Rod McDonagh said: ‘’With four or even five teams competing for the title this season, it demonstrates how competitive and strong the field has been in 2020, and is a credit to the involvement of all the GP2 teams.’’
Speaking after his double victory, rider Mason Law, said:
“Looking back over the races, I was a little tense in the first race and didn’t waken up until title rival [and leader going into Brands] Jack Scott came past me. He was my target and we managed to get the drag to the line in race one by 0.026-second and take the win, which is photo-finish material!
Team Principal Rod McDonagh added: “The championship deciding final round at Brands Hatch delivered a real GP2 spectacle. An incredible weekend of racing with Mason and the whole Spirit team demonstrating the skill, professionalism and tenacity needed to win both final races in a highly competitive and charged environment. We are delighted to have secured the title for our sponsors Moto Corsa, Chedington and Superior Motorcycle Experiences who have supported the new team and bike from inception. It has been an emotional weekend.”
After a well-deserved celebration and much needed-rest, Rod, Mason and the Spirit team joined us at the Moto Corsa showroom in Gillingham. The SP2 race bike was on display for visitors to see as well as the impressive collection of trophies. The display really dominated the space in the Moto Corsa showroom, which is a challenging thing to do in such an impressive and vast space. The eye was drawn straight in to the striking black and red aesthetic. Alongside the bike and gleaming trophies was a set of Mason’s race-leathers which were generously donated to the Guy family of The Chedington Court Estate, a meaningful souvenir from such a memorable debut of this partnership. Rod, Mason and the wider team were openly and warmly chatting away to passers-by, and the charismatic Law was even signing professional photos, bringing a sense of celebrity and glamour to Moto Corsa on a rainy Saturday morning. We are grateful for the team for visiting, and we think it proved a great opportunity for the team and sponsors to get together and give fans and visitors the opportunity to meet a professional racer. We wish the whole team a peaceful rest over the winter season, and are so excited to see what they can achieve in the following seasons, watch this space!
